Project profile for ISKE project
SuedOstLink is a planned direct-current underground cable line between Klein Rogahn and Wolmirstedt, with the ISAR grid connection point near Landshut.
The SuedOstLink is primarily intended to transport electricity from renewable energy sources from northern and eastern Germany to Bavaria. This is necessary because large conventional power plants in the south are gradually being taken off the grid. Additionally, as part of the energy transition, Germany aims to be predominantly powered by renewable energy sources by 2050.
From Klein Rogahn to the Thuringia-Bavaria border, the transmission system operator 50Hertz is responsible for the line. In Bavaria, TenneT plans and builds the underground cable line from Münchenreuth in the Hof district to the ISAR grid connection point in the Landshut district.
With the energy transition, Germany will be almost entirely supplied by renewable energy sources by 2050. Eighty per cent of the electricity supply will be covered by renewable energies by then. This process will sustainably reshape the German electricity landscape. A new structure of energy supply will accompany this:
While large conventional power plants are being shut down in southern Germany, wind power is being massively expanded in northern Germany. This creates a surplus of renewable energy in northern Germany, while there is an increasing demand for electricity in the south. This can lead to bottlenecks in the distribution of electricity over the grid – similar to an hourglass, where a large amount of sand has to flow through a narrow opening from top to bottom. The demands on our power grids are steadily increasing. Our legal obligation as a transmission system operator is to reliably supply our fellow citizens with electricity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year –
anywhere in Germany, regardless of where the electricity is produced or consumed. Bavaria is a strong economic region and one of the most populous federal states in Germany. It relies on the expansion of renewable energies, especially solar energy, but also wind and hydropower as well as biomass. We are building the SuedOstLink to reliably supply Bavaria with electricity in the future. The expansion of decentralised energies on site and the optimisation, reinforcement and new construction of transmission networks are not contradictory but go hand in hand. We are involving people from the region in planning SuedOstLink from the outset. Our goal: to find a route for the underground cable that is as compatible as possible with people and the environment.
